I think it was some sort of treaty or something like that. I'm not sure--it's been awhile since I've studied David.

On the letter is written the name of Marat's assassin: Citizeness Charlotte Corday
To gain entrance to his presence, Charlotte Corday brought with her a false petition for him to read - David has taken one sentence from this petition which was meant to be from some needy woman - and writes it below Corday's name: In translation it reads: "My great unhappiness gives me a right to your kindness". |
