I have some ring ideas. Well, I don't want to leave the bottom of the ring-blank plain becaue some of the glue I will use might show. I want to be able to pour some paint onto the glue/metal and have it not flake off really easily.

metal primer first then paint with enamel or oil base paint '
also you might like to look into auto paint it uses a primer also but has some very nice selection to pick from |

The answer really depends upon the type of metal. In order for paint to stick to metal it must bond to the surface in some manner. Depending upon the metal the person with the primer answer hit it the best. Clean the metal with acetone then clean with alcohol. Don't touch it with your fingers, prime it with a primer made for metal and then paint over the primer after very lightly brushing with emery cloth and wiping with a clean cloth.
Or just dump it is some fingernail polish. It won't stick but looks pretty for a while! |

Best paint to use for your purpose is all purpose metal paint like Hammerite http://www.hammerite.com/ It works as a primer, sticks to most metals and is a finish in one go and comes in natural metal color or 'special effects'.
Nice bonus is you can buy it in very small tins so the cost is also as low as you need it to be. |
