The Limbourg Brothers (Herman, Paul, and Johan) painted it. It is a part of a series of painting for an illuminated manuscript (or almanac). There are 12, one for each month, each depicting something about that month. It was made for the Duke of Berry so that they could keep track of the different steps of growing crops throughout the year. It was illuminated on vellum. The paintings were simply a visual depiction of each month. I'm not quite sure which month this is, but it looks like they are about to eat so whatever month you would be eating the harvest. The whole book is called Tres Riches Heures du Duke Berry. I'm sure if you looked up this name you would be able to find all the months and see what the others look like and find out more of their history!!
