I currently have Song DSC T5. It is just a very simple 5.1 digital camera which was given to me by my mother. Actually, I began to enjoy taking pictures because of this camera. It takes clear, crisp and superb pictures. I'm satisfied with it but I want to start photography seriously. I will just sell this camera and buy another one. Any advice?

It really depends on the amount of money you're willing to spend on a camera and then the subsequent amount of money you are willing to invest in your hobby as the time goes by.
If there is some money involved I would suggest picking out one of the entry-level cameras such as the Nikon D50 (my fav) or the Canon 400D. The new Sony DSLR (A100) is also a good choice, but Canon and Nikon are the most logical ones due to the amount of gear you can purchase and the definite future of the two systems. |

The lenses of Olympus are good, but pretty expensive. The image quality however is very inferior to that of either of the three I mentioned. Mostly due to smaller sensor size. And inferior sensor

Thank you for the recommendations. I checked out the cameras you mentioned. It's definitely more expensive than the cameras of any of the people I know (they are not photographers anyway). But I can shell out money for this. Funny, all the cameras I ever owned were from Sony. I don't think I'll be buying Sony this time.
I have checked Amazon and Leica M8 is not yet available. How much is it anyway? |

i bought olympus e20p, bought it second handed for 400 euro. i'm happy with it, just a bit slow with writing, and takes 3 to 4 seconds to start.

Wow! I just cannot afford that, Leon. $2000 is the maximum I can spend for this.
Second hand is okay with me too. Where did you buy your camera, chieuw? Do you think it's okay to buy from eBay or Amazon? |

I don't think there's much risk involved with a buyer with loads of reputation points. A little different about warranty especially if you're getting it from outside your country though...

I would have to agree on the Nikon or Cannon. I couldn't spend as much as I would have liked when getting my DSLR, but I found an excellent camera in my Cannon EOS XT. Amazing picture quality. I have two lenses which I think are essential even if you are just starting out. The 18-55 mm and the 75-300mm. Now I am sure I am missing some by not having the "in-between" mm's, but hey, I haven't noticed it. I would like to get a better flash (which I have found you should get asap) and a longer lens. The longer lenses are SO expensive. Maybe one day!

The site www.dpreview.com has excellent reviews on cameras. If I remember correctly you can even search by the price range. You want a camera that is going to be stable, especially when you zoom in. But don't do what many of us (mainly talking about me..hehe.) I am sure have done in the past; which is to think that the "digital" zoom will help you when wanting to zoom in on a subject. I am not even sure why digital zoom is put on these digital cameras. I have never experienced good picture quality with digital zoom (If you do know of one then feel free to correct me
I love taking macro shots. Fuji makes really nice cameras in that price range. Just take a look at that site; there is a wealth of information on purchasing cameras. Hope that helps! |

Thanks for your replies. I have not decided yet. It's really hard to choose one. I have read lots of reviews and I got more confused.
Anyway, I'm thinking of getting the Canon 400D or Nikon D80. I want the Leica camera which Leon recommended but I can't afford that. |

Leon: Why do you recommend the Nikon. I am looking for information on the comparison of the makers Cannon, and Nikon. I would like to know you thoughts on the Nikon. What features does a Nikon have that make you recommend it? How does it compare to the Cannon?
Having this information will help in the decision process, as it will provide a grounds for making that decision. |
