In Tom Thomson's painting "Northern river" , what is actually being described?

A guy studying Thomson found a lot of his subjects' locations and learned a lot from that study but it isn't 100% sure where 'Northern River' is. It is likely into the upper reaches of the Don River or the Humber River because at the time of the painting he was going with A.Y.Jackson , Lismer, and Varley on weekend sketching trips up in those areas.
