What do I see? Make a list of all the things you see in the work.
-the size of the work, medium used, and the process used -the subject, object, and details -elements of art used in the work(line, shape, texture, space, form, color, value) I am doing an art critique. Just find anything you can. I need help especially with the arts of elements used line please. This is what I have so far: In the Persistence Of Memory, I see an evening sky, a branch, and melting clocks. This work was large in size when Dali painted it. He created this painting using oil on a canvas. Please give me some more info. Thanks. |

It's actually a very small painting - about 10x13".
Look at the painting and describe what you see. You're off to a fairly good start. It seems that they wants a description of the formal elements (what you see), rather than an interpretation (the meaning behind the painting). Here are a few things you can discuss: The painting shows a very long depth of field. The foreground elements are highly detailed (the ants, fly, eyelashes, etc.). The foreground is darkly shadowed and painted in cool tones, and the background is lighter and warmer. Talk about the contrast in colors and light; the implied texture of the "melting" elements, the reflection of the mountains and the layers of shadows. Anytime you talk about Dali, mention dream imagery. Talk about the mood of the painting. |
