In a novel I am reading, the character mentions that
Van Gogh said orange is color of insanity. After thinking about that, I thought about orange, and I think it really does feel a little wacky. Did Van Gogh really say that? and is the colour really for insanity? I love orange by the way |

Can not find any references to a Van Gogh quote about orange and insanity. Agent Orange was a horrible herbicidal chemical used by the US in Viet Nam that caused cancers and sickness for people-an insane situation for them,to be sure. A Clockwork Orange is a book written by Anthony Burgess and made into a film by Stanley Kubrick-about the life and insanity of a young boy. Other than that, orange is considered a positive color.

There are many studies showing colors have an intense affect on the human psyche, such as blue being calming and red helps induce hunger. Orange is an energizing, and excitingcolor, and can bring people out of a depressed state. These reactions are not universal.
If Van Gogh stated that I do not know. However their have been theories that Van Gogh had a type of epilepsy, among other metal illnesses. http://www.infoplease.com/spot/colors1.html http://jrscience.wcp.muohio.edu/nsfall99/FinalArticles/Final1.HowColorAffectsMoo.html http://psychology.about.com/od/sensationandperception/a/colorpsych.htm http://library.thinkquest.org/27066/psychology/nlcolorpsych.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_psychology |

I would think that the choice of a color for insanity would depend entirely on the individual insane person own experience.
