I have gone and done it now! My son's teacher heard I had given a batik demo to the 11 year old class, so she asked me to lead her 10 year old class in making a watercolor picture of dandelions. I said I would. This is great! I have never done watercolors before! So I went to the library and checked out a book.
I will get them in groups of twelve, for fifteen minutes per group per day, on three consecutive days. Feb 14,15,16. I decided on mixed media, so there will only be paint and water on the second day. I believe I can pull this off. What the teacher does not know is that I have no formal art training. My college degree is in agricuture. |

Well, as long as you have a feel for understanding and communicating with children you have already won this. I am pretty sure you will be able to pull it off, you just need to make it as interesting as possible. Perhaps not painting mere flowers, but rather something that a child of that age would be more interested in.
I'd have to ask my little brother for more info on that, hehe |

Well, today is my first day! The subject of dandelions is not my choice. Art for the sake of art is not really taught. Art is joined to something else. They are studying history about the first white settlement of the Great Plains, and reading a book about a family that "staked a claim" in Nebraska and built a sod house. My great great grandmother lived in a sod house in Nebraska. The government gave free land to the first person who drove a stake into each parcel. It was a hard life and they built their partly subterranean houses out of sod because it was the only building material around. Many of them died young.

It was a hard time for a lot of people back then, but I'm thinking that the indians had a bit tougher issue at that time
Dandellion ... hm, perhaps try showing them the first part of Ice Age and have them draw the rhynos as well? |

Well, we did it! It was an adventure. They did pretty well, a little problem following instructions, but many had a hard time with the simplicity. It's and age when they want to be photographic. At the end, they gave me a copy of the dandelion book that they had all signed.
There is one girl who can make the mind switch that you need for art. At ten. Wow. Unfortunately, she is otherwise a problem--stealing, bullying, disobedience.....When I mentioned it to the people in the office when I signed out, they were surprised that she was good at something. Will this make a difference in her life? Probably not. |
