I am an amateur artist. My style is pretty realistic, but sometimes I want to try something different, like the ancient cave paintings or something made of mostly dots, like Australian Aborigines' art. When I finally send out my portfolio to potential clients/employers, should it include more than one style, or should I just stick to one?

I think its good to show your versatility, but only if you excel at different styles. You want to showcase your very best.

It depends on the place you are applying to. If they specialize in realistic art, then include just your realistic artwork. If you are trying to get into a school, or a job that does a variety of different work, show them how versatile you are. But be sure to have some works in reserve as well. If they ask for some more samples and you have none, it will look bad.

most schools require different styles in your portfolio. be glad you are good at (drawing?--you didn't specify your medium) realistic drawings, because many schools like to see still life art.
if you are an amateur artist, why don't you go to school to hone your craft? you'd get more clients that way &, generally, the only people who will hire a freelance artist with no secondary education are larger graphic design companies. |

I think if you have got talent, why not show it to potential clients/employers? It shows that you are unique and different. The only thing is if they specify they are looking for one particular style you should do as they ask. Otherwise my advice is showcase your best!!! Good luck
