I paint landscapes with oils. My style is realism, with loose brushwork.
The most obvious venue for selling art is an art gallery, but I don't like the idea of paying a 40-50% commission. |

Fake your death and dissappear for a few years and it won't matter because it will fly off the shelves. Oh and don't forget to be part of some kind of scandal before you "die" GOOD LUCK

You should sell through a gallery nonetheless.

The percentage that a good gallery would take will be worth it. A good gallery owner can get a much higher price for your paintings and show known collectors your work. Just talk to some of your local gallery owners and go with one who seems fair & honest. A great gallery owner will be priceless to your career.

Is there any local art stores or organizations in your community that has showings around your area? Here in L.A. we belong to the local artist guild and have monthly art shows to sell our paintings in side malls, etc. Then you don't need to worry about over-head and commissions. Hopefully you can find through your city hall of any such clubs. =0

The question should not be "what venue" rather it should be "how do I want to sell" assuming there is a market for them.
How might be: the Internet, art fair, gallery, streetside, competition, from the studio. Each requires identifying the buying public, getting them to review your work, then making a sale. The commission is the price of marketing...a professional dedicated to getting your art before the proper publics...those with high potential of being a buyer...not just a group of other artists, friends and event jumpers. |

Well then, don't look at it as a 50% commission.
Think of it as you asking for the price you want, and the gallery marking that price up by 100%. Seriously, marketing your own work can be time-consuming and expensive. Galleries will get your work in front of more qualified buyers, faster. It's their business. |
