I bought a tube of acrylic retarder the other day after doing a little research on different acrylic mediums. I haven't had the chance to use it yet, nor do I know anyone that uses it. I'm just curious as to how long, in general, it keeps the paint from drying. I mean, are we talking hours... or more like minutes?

well im sure it will last an hour or more. depends on the brand and the brand of acrylics its used with. a better way to preserve painted on your palette is to take a cookie tray, lay 4-5 layers of paper towels, then sparay it with a good amount of water. if u use this kind of palette, your acrylic paints will not dry for a day or two. even better, u can lay some tin foil over it while your not working so it lasts even longer. oh one more thing, you shound tape the paper towels to the tray so the dont lift off when u start to paint. the same technique can be used for oils as well, but wet the palette with linseed oil or turpentine instead.

depending on ventilation and humidity, figure 20-30 minutes for it to still be workable. As for rubbing smudges of color off the wall, give it another 45 minutes

It depends on how you use your paint. You can expect it to at least double it's drying time.
