I want use it for an art project but it's hard to find tips on what sort of techniques and materials it works best with.

depending on projects, clothing (plastic/ acrylic), posters (tempera), walls (acrylic) ; and materials, the ultraviolet lamp is important, and how many, and how dark the room is, there are also white materials that show up in black lite, you could include those,
