I usually rip paper in half horizontally, then in quarters vertically. Crumpled paper takes up more room in the trashcan than ripped paper.

First I crumple it up, then I throw it at the garbage can. 10% of the time, it make it. 30% of the time, it bounces off the can. The other 60% of the time it ends up no where near the garbage can.

If it's super important stuff on the paper I will bring it to the nearest shreader (if available) or tear it several times.
Other less important things will just get folded once and dropped. If I'm in a sporting mood, I'll crumble and toss.

Both unimportant or not private crumble.

Worried about privacy, torn and placed in seperate trash cans in seperate places. Or better I take it outside and burn it.
