i think of renoir as kind of an intermediary -- he was somewhat revolutionary in his ideas and concepts but in skill he was surpassed by his peers -- so his art seems kind of boring compared to other impressionists.
the whole impressionist movement is kind of fun to study -- young artists could learn a thing or two from them. the salon des refuses was much better than no salon at all. right now i am trying to think of any world leader making a salon -- i think that is part of why we pass off diamond incrusted skulls as art. |

Renoir (REN wah) was a mediocre impressionist in my opinion...I found that Marie Cassatt, Toulouse Lautrec, Manet, Monet and Surat were all more inventive, lively and willing to 'push the boundaries' than Renoir was...even Van Gogh with his heavy metal caused schizophrenia was more interesting! Renoir had just a little too much interest in dallying with the Ballet girls backstage to give art as serious a push as the other impressionists did.

Pee-air Oh-guust (g as in game) Ru (As in rugby) nwaar (aar as are). And keep those R's rolling real french like.
Amazing painter and sculptor. Romantic impressionism at it's best. Although I have to admit he sometimes is to sweet for my taste I have moments I truly enjoy his work. |
