I've been thinking about becoming a police officer for a while. When I see cops in my neighborhood (nyc) I often imagine wearing the uniform and walking side to side w/them. It's something that I really want to do for me. Currently I'm in school studying Communication design, and I love design and media and I've been designing for years, but it doesn't make me feel useful, or important. I want to have a career were I can go home and know I've made a difference, that by me being here I've changed the world. Not just working for a company to help them meet their bottom line. I've been thinking about something federal. Should I stick w/ what I know or follow my dream and become a cop?

Follow your dream. You already have a bad attitude and it will only get worse. Face it, the wealthy and their buddies run the world. Be a cop or join the FBI and screw over all the wealthy scumbags. On top of that, you'll get a lot of poxy. Then again, my dad and my bro are both cops and it can be taxing on you. Divorces are common and you deal with the scum of the earth all day.

Follow your heart and pursue what you think will be the best for you. If you feel like law enforcement is your true calling then I say go for it.
And FYI, design can be very helpful and can make a difference. It's about the type of project that you pursue or get yourself involved in. I'm currently assisting on a campaign that will utilize design to help everyday citizens better evacuation a city in emergency situations like another Katrina incident. It's not as sexy as being a policeman, but I feel like I am contributing to making the world a better place in my own way. If you're a designer I'm sure you're familiar with the works of Bruce Mau, who uses design to better the lives of people in third-world nations. I'm not trying to talk you out of your decision, but design can make a big difference in the world if utilized correctly and in the right direction. |
