I was in Independant Art all 4 years of high school and one thing i learned is to move my whole arm not just my wrist. Relax and try this it may help.

You're making short start and stop lines to make one continuous line.
I do this a good bit myself when doing drafts but when you do a final piece you have to work the line out farther. There are a few things you can do to overcome this. One get used to backing up over your line. Instead of just starting where you stopped, start on a spot far enough back the you actually trace part of it then continue on. Another way is to use your fingers more to control the pencil than your hand. Get used to stretching the point out as far as you can and bring it in as far as possible. A good exersize for thi is just doing common shapes. Circles, squares, things like that. You don't have to shade them if you don't want to just an outline will do. This is good for doing smaller things and detail work. If you're working bigger you'll have to use more of your arm. Use the whole thing to drag the pencil where you want it. It can take some getting used to because you'll want to just use the hand. Another thing is trying to hold the hand above the paper when doing this. You don't want to drag the hand across when you do this but let it hover closley. The toughest part is getting your head around doing things a new way. With a bit of practice it will get to the point where it becomes second nature. One way of doing this is to treat the pencil as an extension of you and lose the thought of I'm holding a pencil. If you get into the mindset of it's just an extension you will find that things will flow easier, (With time) and that you will be able to control your lines easier. Sometimes when you think I have to control this pencil you can get into trouble by controling it too much and you start to run into problems. Hope this helps |
