Hi:
Do you mean paintings that are based on scenes from outer space - such as landscapes based on other planets and their view of the sky? If for these, you probably will want to use methods that portray realism of the possible landscapes or sky patterns. For various techniques of painting, you can make a basic black and white underpainting, and then put transparent glazes over that for coloring - usually this is done in oils, but you can use acrylics too. You can also do direct painting - where you apply the general color and then possibly refine it. You can use a variety of paints - oils or acrylics, watercolor, gouache and sometimes combinations of them. The problem with oils is that they can take a very long time to dry - some take months depending on the application - and acrylics often dry too fast. There are a few paints inbetween these - you can get Alkyd Winsor and Newton type paints, that are oils that dry a little faster, and you can combine them with regular oils. Acrylics normally dry too fast (at least for me) - you can get slow drying extenders that help a little with that. I also saw a video from an art convention not too long ago that you can get to from a link on the Pastel Journal, a newer type of acrylic paint that is reworkable - Chroma Interactive Acylics. That might be a very good paint to investigate. You can also use other water based paints, such as gouache and watercolors, but for what you might be doing, you might want oil or acrylic types. Be sure to check out the Golden Acrylic medium demo and website with the gels and mediums - they are very cool and if you're going for sort of decorative painting, they may give you some great ideas. You might also get some good advice from the online artists' community, wetcanvas. There is are many painting related channels, with many thread and articles from members, and over 114,000 worldwide members. Basic membership is completely free, but you can also browse many areas as a guest. This is one of the best sites I know, and I almost alway mention it in my yahoo art answers. It might really help you with good information about painting styles you might be interested in. Hope this helps and gives you at least a few ideas. |

I like my airbrush for the nebulous effects of space, as well as the shining light around stars.
