I'm trying to create a "brick" design in Indesign, is there like an automatic feature for it? How about in Illustrator?

There's usually a CD of stock images and clipart which comes with Illustrator, if you have the program disks you could check that out. Otherwise, have a look at this free Illustrator add-on:
