For my fine art unit I can do ANYTHING. I have been briefed to come up with my own theme which will be the basis for my project. Problem is I could actually do anything which is what i'm finding so difficult. I've had ideas but i really wanted something original. Any ideas?

Hee hee hee. You have my sympathy!
My first thought was - give them what they want above all else!!! ...sometimes being original can cause problems with art teachers who want you to "do it by the book". Now I feel that you ought to do something that inspires you the most, that way you will give it your best. I had a choice like that in High School and I choose to do Guitars because I love to play music [these days maybe drums!]. Anyway ... the point is to do something YOU are interested in - you must have favourite things, also styles you are good at - that will bring out the quailities of your most liked 'thing'. Perhaps you love trees, dogs or cars... what ever it is, the theme ought to be of great interest to you, for another reason... when you are done with the unit, you will have the work when it's done? ...so perhaps you could make it something you will want to keep or give to some one special. I did a 'rainbow coloured arched stone window' print for myself and discovered that [years later] my father 'really' wants it! Best Wishes for you fine art unit ... hee hee, I'm sure it will be fine! |

Find a focus- go through magazines like Rolling Stone, National Geographic and see if an idea captures your attention- look to the news on TV- any tragedy you could explore by putting images together in a new way? I cut out photos and keep in a file for future use just for this purpose... OR choose one subject- lets say a rabbit (for example) create it in many different medias (pencil, ink, paint etc.) AND look at work done by your favorite artists and see if and how they did it... hope this helps.

Ah, I've had this problem once.
It is extremely troublesome, no? Like one of the other answers said, most teachers base it upon looks....I also think you didn't define the answer enough. =P Is it abstract art? Realism? What mediums are required? Is there a time limit? What are you creating this piece of art on? A canvas? Paper? How graphic can this piece of art be? and so on.... Well, I'll try to answer this as best as I can! =D Find inspiration....go out for a walk, just listen to the leaves in the trees. If you live in a large city go people-watching(not stalking) and ponder about how, why, and what are on their minds? Go to a place with vivid colors.....just look at them thoughtfully, twist the colors and create images. Try listening to some music when creating your piece of art (I would suggest Cocorosie, HYDE: Roentgen Series, Tom Waits, Vivaldi,Yoko Kanno, Dredg, Leo Brouwer, and Madredeus). Explore your imagination....see how far it could go, go beyond what other humans would even dare to think about. Create something with your imagination & heart, create something beautiful & divine. Create something that makes you smile, create something that makes you fill up with emotions. |
