when measuring a piece of artwork, do you measure the actual piece alone or that and the mat board together?
I'm applying for a BFA and they need my portfolio with the measurements |

Well, I would say that you should measure a few things.
1. The perimeter around the paper/canvas. 2. The perimeter around the actual picture (if this differs from number 1) 3. The perimeter around the mat board. Purposes for each: Measure 1 to have an idea of how much room you have to play with when matting. Measure 2 to figure out how large the opening of the mat needs to be. Measure 3 to figure out what size frame you need. |

You measure the actual piece. The mats are not a part of the artwork, they are a support and protection for the artwork. The utilitarian aspect of mats have become part of the aesthetics as well.
