Depends on what you are trying to do.

I have after effects 5.5 and love it! I use it to add motion to my clips and manipulate all kinds of things.

There is almost nothing you can't do with After Effects. Not sure about Illustrator to be honest.

I use this program a lot because it can make my videos look like they were made in the studio.
