Zoe asked this question on the artcone forums: Hey everyone…I’m doing a dissertation on the media coverage of the Tate Britain’s annual Turner Prize and was just wondering what the general public thought about it and modern art. If you were reading the dissertation, what would you like to get out of it i.e. particular sections etc. why do you think the general British public hate modern art and why do the media treat it so badly? I’d be really grateful for any help…I seem to be going round in circles!!

Hello,
I think the general British public dont like Modern art because they dont understand it. These days there is a lot of surrealism, Ive heard so many times “I could do that, theyve only splashed some paint around the canvas!”
Before photographs were introduced people paid to get themselves painted, then the camera was invented so artists needed something different to paint.
I think the British public look to see how a good a painting is in terms of how realistic it looks.
Hope this helps.
Good luck with the dissertation x
