Omnious asked this question on the artcone forums: How do you remove red eye from photos using paint shop pro–WITHOUT changing the iris design or color? I hate the red eye option because my irises never look the same. I just want darker pupils. I’ve tried the paint brush feature, but the brush is too large for such a small area!

Decrease the size of the brush and zoom in. You can get the brush size down to 1 pixel if you want.
An easier option is to first use a selection tool (ie., the lasso) to carefully select only the offending red part of the pupils, and then use the Brightness/Contrast tool to decrease the brightness of the selection until the photo looks okay to you. This is a much quicker method.

You can also try desaturating the red.

The advice regarding reducing brush size is good. Zoom into the pupil and use a small brush. It also helps to soften the brush a little to prevent sharp, broken looking edges to the pupil. Also, try not to use a jet black, as this usually looks unnatural against the other dark tones in the image (full jet black rarely appears in colour photos). Try to clone a dark shade from the photo which may appear black, but really be a very dark shade of another colour.
It’s much easier to avoid red-eye in the first place. Red-eye reduction on cameras helps, but the best way (and gives you better overall shots anyway) is to override the flash whenever you can and use the ambient lighting conditions. Standard cameras employ flash far more than necessary, but you will find it useful to lean on something to improve camera stability, as your shutter speed will be slower.
This will not only eliminate red eye, but also give better colours and provide natural shadows.
If flash is essential (ie very dark conditions), don’t have your subject loking directly into the camera, perhaps photograph them when they aren’t aware and speaking to someone else. This often creates a better and more natural image anyway.
If in doubt, take a few shots with and without flash and in different poses and select the best later.
