Have you tried using bevel and emboss for this? It would create a shadow and a highlight which you can then manipulate and deform to fit just about any form.

I’ve been tinkering with it, but I can’t seem to get a realistic blend with the background.

Mind giving away the image so I can tinker with it? Perhaps make a tutorial out of it?
