Lombi asked this question on the artcone forums: MILWAUKEE — Authorities said a painting worth $300,000 was attacked by a Milwaukee museum visitor.
A 21-year-old Pewaukee man faces charges after police said he caused serious damage to a painting at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
Police said the man tore a 17th-century oil painting off the wall and repeatedly kicked it.
The “Triumph of David” painting depicts the end of the biblical story of David and Goliath. The images shows David carrying Goliath’s severed head, WISC-TV reported.
Authorities said the man was reportedly disturbed by the image and attacked the painting.

There is such a fine line these days between being able to have close access to painting and works of art but also protecting them from people who can’t control themselves. I think in this case they could maybe have used better fixings to attach it to the wall!

Unfortunate as this may be, we have to start looking at the security of the artwork being displayed. Yes it is nice to be able to get close enough to see fine details, but I do not think that anything that is old such as this painting was should ever be displayed in a manner that will allow it to be touched, let alone anything else to be done to it. I bet the museum will re-evaluate their procedures now.
It is sad that people have to resort to destroying something because they are bothered by it.
