Okay, I've now hopefully sucesfully integrated the 48 hour limit per artwork into the system.
I would like to hear your thoughts about also having some sort of minimum comment per given artwork hardcoded into the system. So say a person that doesn't comment on other people's artwork wouldn't be able to post in the gallery more than once. In an ideal world this would mean more feedback for everyone. What say you about this? |

Hm, I'm not a fan of having restrictions put on me, on a website... But... well, here's where I stand.
Somedays I like to comment a lot, some days I'm in the mood to submit art work. If i'm feeling peticularly anti social or depressed about something, I don't wanna tell someone how beautiful their peice of crap may be (I know that's harsh. continueing) - I'm just going to want to submit the peice of art that I feel gets my feelings across... However, I do realize that this may increase the amount of beef in the forums which it does need - but i'm afraid I still Vote Nay! |

I am completely with you on that, but this is to weed out people that register and never post comments on other people's artwork.

Would this be:
You can upload 1 image, comment on X others, upload 1, etc Or You can upload images until your total gallery post count is "used up" as it were? Ie, must you make X posts between submissions or would making twice that number between submissions allow you to post 2 (after 48 hours obviously) without commenting between? |

It would be the same sistem as it was before. Now the 48 hour thingie is fully working and I want to do a poll about also implementing the second one.
It would be: 1 artwork uploaded + 3 (2? 1?) comments = another artwork possible |

I voted "yay"
Just as M-tic said, It would be very good to see how different people feel about your art instead of the same 3 or 4 lol. :bla: |

I'm voting yay, it's going to encourage more people to be active and allow you to recieve a broader view of what people think of their work.
If the same people are always commenting on your pieces, you being to *think* what their going to say and base your work on that, but with more views then you can tell what many people think. @cof, u've never liked smilies :blah: Feathers |

Hehe, actually I think that there is a hardcoded limit of somewhere around 10 smileys somewhere in the code, just not 100% sure about that. :chinese:

Oukey here's the deal :blah: hehe anyway there is in average of 2 comment's on submition end i must say this is an opinion of just one of donno how many ppl use this page and it would be a lot helpful for some new-comers to learn more if they get more critics and corrections!
Ok I understaind, if you don't have any time but, if you can submite and image you can leave a few comments! |

Indeed. I was also thinking about having some sort of points system in place instead of the comment ratio thingie. Say a user gets points for posting in forums and commenting, but loses points once the image gets posted etc.
Just an idea out there. |

Lombi,Feb 12 2006, 12:45 AM I know I'm really late on this thread. Really really late! But I like leaving the comments and then I feel I must get busy, so I go somewhere else. But here is what I think. I question the value of forced comments, hurried comments. Most of the time, when I comment, it takes a while. Then I go back and edit, trying to convey more precisely what I mean. It is in no way quick and dirty, unless I feel totally unqualified to have an opinion. Some things just gross me out 'cause I'm old. I like forcing my brain to think about art in the morning when it wants to avoid work. I'm honest in my comments, but try to be kind. That's usually not hard. I think most people want to improve on what they do. One possibility would be to allow a search for all the comments made by one person, so you could see how accurate or carefull a critic they are. If they've made 32 comments and they all say "Nice job! Keep it up and you'll leave amatuer status behind!" it would be safe to disregard their opnion. What I do is very different from what is here and i'm too chicken poop to submit it. |

Very understandable. But the problem here is the users who fail to meet some sort of a commenting ratio - only upload works and never comment anyone elses.
It is a gallery, but also a community. |

I haven't been a member of this community very long but I have noticed that the same names seem to be popping up in the comments section, not that it bothers me although over time I am sure that I will learn what particular people like and what others don't. It would be nice to see a variety of comments from a variety of people, it encourages me to grow as an artist. When I am looking at others artwork I don't make a comment just for the sake of it...if a work moves me either positively or negatively then I am bound to comment. I think it heartwarming sometimes just to hear 'nice job' without all the other blurb.

Never saw that idea about a points system Lombi, seems like a pretty good suggestion.
My only concern with a system to regulate uploads by user-activity is that there will be a lot more, "nice" or "I like it" comments, rather than anything of substance. Maybe its just me who gets annoyed by such posts, but in fairness things like that dont help people develop at all |

I completely understand where you are coming from and I probably know to who you are referring to as well. However the fact is that we can't force other users and members to comment images and it's the same for all websites that show art.
Your suggestions on how this could be improved is of course very welcome <!--quoteo(post=7337:date=Mar 22 2006, 02:39 PM:name=Cof)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Cof @ Mar 22 2006, 02:39 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--> Never saw that idea about a points system Lombi, seems like a pretty good suggestion. another LATE entry on the subject
Perhaps it should have been titled THE CAN OF WORMS Vote: NO If the proposed rules were in place at the point of joining artworld I might not have. As a newbie with a membership of about a week and aprox. 6 posts to my name , I enter this debate not only LATE but with a fair degree of trepidation. Initially I have watched and read, and submitted a couple of images in order to participate. And untill reading this forum felt that in order to comment on others work firstly one needs to establish some technical credentials and more importantly willingness for participation. How wrong was I. With that personal explanation out of the way Might I offer an alternative to compulsory voting / commenting If someone is seeking comment in order to improve their skill base then let them say so when they submit their work. ie explain what they have tried to achieve and where they think they need help. People might then feel a need to help and comment If they are submitting in order to have their egos massaged (and we all need a little of that from time to time) they could offer no explanation and therefore remove the obligation for members to comment unless they are moved to do so. Others have already said it so here's an echo, commenting on others work just for the sake of keeping the board ticking over appears to be the proplem. Lets not make rules to perpetuate the problem. The common denominator is the art. There apears to be a diverse range of styles, skill levels and reasons why people join perhaps if these areas were explored in the forums the answers to greater participation and building the sense of community may be found, right under our noses. Then again it might be found that the creatives who lurk in this space are heavilly right brained and not inclined to undertake left brain activities. Finally in my IMHO commenting offers the opportunity to play the art critic..... And the most noted of them have never been serious practitioners. In considering new directions, perhaps the emphasis should be on genuine encouragement and assistance an not tick the box scores and false hearted commentary. I hope that Iv'e set the cat amongst the pidgeons respectfully hod |

That was a very insightful posting, hod. In fact you've managed to finally convince me that such a system shouldn't be made reality.
However the fact still stands that several members hold the "0 comments made to other member's artwork" and that makes me feel less than happy about the subject. In fact it's perhaps the only outstanding problem here. |
