s0bc asked this question on the artcone forums: Hey, I`ve been searching for a tutorial, or some tips for quite a while now, but seem to be out of luck. I want to make the effect that happens when a bullet(as in bullet like projectile from a gun) hits the ground. It is maybe easiest to simulate when the ground is made of sand or dirt or something like that. If you don`t understand what I mean, try to think of actionmovies where airplanes shoot to the ground with a machinegun. The effect looks like some kind of explosion, except no fire only a peak of sand/dirt and a cloud of dust. If anyone has some hints on how to do this, or even maybe a tutorial for me, I would be very thankful.
Regards
Chris

Are you familiar with paths?
You could try taking a shot of sand, drawing paths where “spray” would occur and then brush along them with a speckley brush setting on the clone tool (source being the sand below)?
Then motion blur the layer you brushed on.
Im only guessing here. no idea if it would create what you want,.

In my oppinion the easiest way to go about this is to bring a friend, get a few beers (give most to him) and then have him throw a rock in the ground (which should have lots of dirt) while you shoot pictures of this.
You will have a lot of very good and useable stock in no-time.

or…. “In my oppinion the easiest way to go about this is to bring a friend, get a few beers (give most to him) and then have him”
run around with a camera while you shoot at him . lol

I think I will try the suggestion involving paths first, and if I fail, I`ll get some moonshine and a gun:p

why don’t you just take a shot from a movie when they are shooting at the ground as you said
i think it’s quite easy to find a film like that

I think computerarts had a similar 20 page tutorial a couple of years back. They did the same thing so…

I did not manage to get the wanted effect with brushing along some paths I made, but I think my crappy made paths has to take some of the blame for that. But what I did manage to do is to follow the “Spectacular explosion” tut here at artworld and tweaked it to my preference. It turned out almost like I wanted and if I add a smoke effect I think it will be ok. I´ll post what I managed to make out later on cause it`s part of a bigger work that`s not quite finished yet. I´ll browse computerarts tuts later to see if they got the tutorial anyway.
